Definition:

Urticaria is the medical term for the condition we call hives, and it can be classified as acute or chronic depending on how long the rash has been present. Hives that occur at least twice a week and have been present for more than 6 weeks are known as chronic hives. Chronic hives can last a very long time; 20% of cases last for decades.
