Best Moisturizers for Scaly Eczema

Moisturizers that contain alpha hydroxy acids work well on scaly skin because alpha hydroxy acids are exfoliants. These moisturizers work well for people with mild eczema because they do not contain any irritating ingredients. They should not be used on areas with broken skin because they can sting.

LactiCare Lotion

LactiCare lotion contains lactic acid as the exfoliant and mineral oil as the moisturizer. It is reasonably priced and would be one of my top picks - except that it has a small amount of fragrance. For people with very sensitive skin, any type of fragrance can be irritating.

Lac-Hydrin Five

Lac-Hydrin Five contains lactic acid that is buffered with ammonium hydroxide. This means that its pH is closer to normal skin, causing less stinging. However, the change in pH often lessens the effectiveness of the exfoliant.

Eucerin Plus

Eucerin is one of the most-recommended moisturizers for eczema. Eucerin Plus contains lactic acid and urea -- both alpha hydroxy acids to exfoliate flaky skin.

Nutraderm Advanced Lotion

Nutraderm Advanced Lotion (formerly Nutraderm 30) contains alpha hydroxy acids, but in a lower concentration than other moisturizers in this review. This means that Nutraderm won't clog pores, but probably won't exfoliate flaky skin as well as the others in this review.

Carmol 10

Carmol 10 contains 10% urea as the exfoliant. This concentration is low enough that it is safe to use anywhere on the body, including the face.

Carmol 20

Carmol 20 contains 20% urea, a higher concentration than Carmol 10. Carmol 20 is a great exfoliant for rough areas on heels, knees, elbows, and hands. But it may sting if used on the face.

Aqua Glycolic Lotion

Aqua Glycolic contains 14% glycolic acid at a pH of 4.4. At this pH level, Aqua Glycolic functions more as a moisturizer than an exfoliant.

AmLactin XL

This moisturizer's ULTRAPLEX™ formulation is a proprietary blend of "high potency" lactic acids. It is more expensive than the others in this review, and in my opinion, wouldn't be the first moisturizer I tried.
