Vibratory angioedema is a rare form of hives that develops in response to contact with vibration. Angioedema is a deeper and more painful form of hives. In vibratory angioedema symptoms develop within 2 to 5 minutes after contact with vibration and resolve after about 1 hour. Patients with this disorder do not have dermographism or pressure urticaria.
Diagnosis
Vibratory angioedema is diagnosed by applying a laboratory vortex to the forearm for 4 minutes. Rapid swelling of the whole forearm extending into the upper arm is noted.
Treatment
The main treatment of vibratory angioedema is avoidance of vibratory stimuli. Antihistamines have also been helpful.
