by Paula Begoun
The Beauty Bible by best-selling author, Paula Begoun, is a well-researched book that contains the latest information about skin care and cosmetics. The 2nd edition, released in June 2002, was extensively rewritten because there have been so many changes in the world of beauty since the first edition came out in 1977. Paula's states that her goal in writing this book is "to compile and clarify the new data and research to help each woman create the best skin-care routine possible for her specific needs. In addition, I want to help women achieve the best makeup look possible in the fewest steps with the easiest and most effective techniques." Paula achieves that goal by evaluating skin-care formulations based on their ingredients and comparing the company's claims to the latest research about that ingredient. She also outlines a no-nonsense approach to various aspects of skin care and makeup application. As with her other books, Paula helps readers understand the hype of the cosmetics industry. She gives us the facts about the tactics used to sell products including:
Paula explains the facts behind several of the latest hot issues like antioxidants and free-radical damage, vitamins, sodium lauryl sulfate, and human growth factor just to name a few. Some of these "new discoveries" have shown promise, others need to be studied more, and others are just plain frauds. There are several chapters detailing the facts about skin care basics like moisturizer formulations, sun damage and sunscreens, and skin cleansers. Paula also extensively explains what causes wrinkles and cosmetic surgery options. Other areas covered include hair removal, nail care, and skin care specifically for men and babies. Paula gives some no-nonsense advice about various aspects of beauty. She outlines battle plans for skin care depending on your skin type, wrinkles, dry skin, blemishes, and wounds and scars. She also gives advice on how to apply makeup step-by-step. Finally, she describes some solutions to common problems women face like dark circles under the eyes, chapped lips, flaking eyeshadow, and discolored teeth. This book was written by a woman who uses cosmetics. Paula uses skin-care products, wears make-up, colors her hair, and gets manicures and pedicures. She has also had cosmetic procedures like Bo Tox injections, breast implants, and laser skin resurfacing. She understands that beauty takes time and money. Paula's ultimate commandment is "Thou shalt be an informed consumer, because what you don't know can cost you dearly in terms of your skin, appearance, and money." |
