Definition: Acute refers to how long a disease has been present, but there is no set time that divides acute from the other time descriptions - subacute and chronic. Acute is the shortest time course description. In other words, a condition that occurs acutely has just started within the past few days.
Pronunciation: uh-KYOOT (adjective)
