Is Your Cell Phone Giving You a Rash?

Tuesday October 21, 2008
The British Association of Dermatologists is warning physicians and the public about the development of a new allergic skin condition located on one side of the face and the ear.

This dermatitis is caused by prolonged contact with the nickel found in cellular phone handsets and is aptly called "mobile phone dermatitis."

Nickel is a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. In the cell phones tested, nickel was most often found on menu buttons, decorative logos, and the metallic frame around the display.

Since many doctors are not aware of this new rash, if you suspect you might have mobile phone dermatitis, bring it up with your physician and avoid prolonged contact between your face and your cell phone.
