Scientists Able to See What Happens in the Brain When We Scratch

With the help of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a type of scan that shows what areas of the brain light up when we do certain things, scientists have discovered what happens in the brain when we scratch. It appears that scratching the skin reduces unpleasant sensory stimuli in the brain. In other words, scratching is pleasurable.
