Cosmetic Eye Product Seized by FDA After Making False Claims

Tuesday November 20, 2007
U.S. Marshals recently seized $2 million dollars of Age Intervention Eyelash on request of the FDA. The FDA claims this product produced by Jan Marini Skin Research is a drug, not a cosmetic because it contains a drug, bimatoprost, which is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved drug used to treat glaucoma. Jan Marini Skin Research claims Age Intervention Eyelash promotes the growth of eyelashes, but this claim is not proven according to stricter guidelines for drugs than cosmetics.

In addition, bimatoprost has adverse side effects. People using the FDA-approved drug for glaucoma and Age Intervention Eyelash have a higher risk of optic nerve damage leading to decreased vision and even blindness. Bimatoprost can also cause swelling of the retina (macular edema) and inflammation of the eye, which can also lead to decreased vision.

According to the FDA, anyone with this product should discard it, and if you are experiencing any of these side effects, you should see your health care provider immediately.

What about the Mavala Double Lash and Revitalash products? Do they also contain bimatoprost?
