Broccoli Good for the Skin?

Monday October 29, 2007
We all know broccoli is a great vegetable. It adds flavor to casseroles, taste great with cheese or lemon pepper, and is even a good snack raw. Can you tell broccoli is one of my favorites?

Now broccoli may move even higher on everyone's favorite vegetable list after a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that broccoli extract applied to the skin may reduce the damaging effects of UV radiation.

Broccoli extract does not absorb UV radiation and keep it from getting into the skin like sunscreens. Instead it causes an increase in enzymes in the cells that keep the cells from being damaged by UV radiation, according to the study.

Who knows, one day in the future we may be not only putting broccoli in casseroles, but we may also be smearing it on our bodies.
