FDA Approves New Topical Antibiotic for Impetigo

The FDA approved a new antibiotic called Altabax (retapamulin) to treat impetigo. Impetigo is a bacterial infection that is highly contagious. In the past impetigo has been treated with Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment four times a day for up to 21 days. Altabax is an improvement in treatment because it is used twice a day for 5 days.
