The American Academy of Dermatology Helps People Choose Sunscreens

From Heather Brannon, MD, About.com GuideMay 28, 2007

Exposure to UV radiation from the sun can lead to premature aging and skin cancer. Wearing the right sunscreen is the best preventive measure to prevent wrinkles and even the deadly skin cancer, melanoma.

In order to help consumers choose the best sunscreen for protection, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has introduced the AAD Seal of RecognitionTM.

In order to receive this seal, a product must meet the following criteria:

  • SPF of 15 or higher
  • Provides protection against UVA and UVB rays
  • Must be stable and water resistant
  • Evidence of phototoxicity testing
  • Meets guidelines in the United States FDA's Sunscreen Monograph
